Chapter Thirty-Four

After concluding the meeting with Yanni and Dimitri, Detectives Grey and Fitzpatrick drove Viridienne back to her car in the commuter lot then stayed beside it until the lights came on and it started. The air was dark and cold, but the roads were clear.

Fitz waited until she was fully out of sight before slipping the patrol car into gear and setting off in the opposite direction. “Your thoughts, Ali?”

“Fitz, you know as well as I do, there’s always something they’re not saying. Sometimes it’s deliberate—sometimes it’s the shock of it all. That’s why we always make a return trip.”

“I suppose. I think we can write off the father—he’s pretty out of it with the dementia and all—but the brother might have something more to tell us.”

“Think so?”

“I’d lay money on it. Don’t you remember? He took an extra beat or two answering a couple of the questions. That always means they’re thinking about what to say. And if they are thinking about what they want to say, they’re also thinking about what not to say.”

“I guess.” She paused. “You know, I wouldn’t discount the old man completely. If you can manage to trigger the right memory, you might be able to pick something up.”

“I suppose, but I’d have to find the trigger. I’ll stick with the brother for now.”

“Are you going to question Viridienne again?”

He nodded. “Absolutely. I know you had your doubts, but in the end, I do think it helped having her come along with us. With her there, it wasn’t so clinical… so cut-and-dried. You know what I mean?”

“Maybe yes, maybe no,” said Alison. “Too soon to tell. On the other hand, she is a living connection to their daughter. She knows about parts of Rose’s later life that her parents don’t know. If I were the brother, I’d want to talk to her again—without a couple of detectives taking notes. I can see her going back there on her own.”

“Jaysus, I hope she doesn’t.”

“Why so?” asked Alison.

“She didn’t say much, but I was watching. She took in every word. She wants to know what happened to her friend. Maybe even more than we do.”

“And considering who and what we might be dealing with here, too much poking around could be dangerous to her health.”

Fitzpatrick nodded. “That’s what worries me. But let’s save the rest of this until tomorrow. I need to sleep on this stuff. You know me—I gotta turn it all over in my head a few hundred times. We’ve got the notes. We’ve got the tape. Little Rosie isn’t going anywhere. Anything else can wait for the light of day.”

“Fitz?”

“Mmm?”

“Did you really get permission from the chief to bring her along?”

Fitz favored her with a quick sideways glance. “Nope.”

“You owe me, buddy.” She winked.

“I owed you long before this, lady, but you’re right… and I’ll make good on it.”

Alison grinned at her partner and shook her head. “Just kidding. You owe me nada, kemosabe. We’re a team. You lie, and I’ll swear by it.
